County-level estimates of employment status are modeled using data from a monthly household survey and unemployment claims. The labor force consists of workers who are employed (worked for pay in the previous week) and are unemployed (available and actively looking for work). The reference week for employment status is typically the week containing the 12th day of the month. County-level estimates are not adjusted for seasonal trends.
Each week, jobless Hoosiers file claims to receive unemployment benefits. These benefits replace a portion of lost wages for workers who lose their job through no fault of their own. Some fluctuations may be seasonal, as the counts are not adjusted for seasonal trends.
